Civil and Environmental Engineering is the study of engineering from a global perspective for protecting the natural environment while improving the human environment and securing social safety and security. An important role of Civil and Environmental Engineering is the realization of laws based on engineering ethics for achieving harmonious coexistence between nature and humanity through the establishment of social infrastructure that allows humans to pursue safe and culturally rich lives. As indicated by the name, Civil and Environmental Engineering involves the intimate relationship between civic life and the natural environment. Inheriting a sixty-year history from its forerunner, the Department of Civil Engineering, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering conducts research into the basic facilities required for civil development supporting cultural life while existing in harmony with nature; specifically, the planning, design, construction and maintenance of bridges, tunnels and disaster prevention facilities such as river embankments, environmental conservation for improvement of water quality, and planning, design and management to assure safety and security of cities and regions. The Major in Construction Engineering takes research further by delving more deeply into specialized aspects of this field based on concepts similar to those of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
